LARG Balloon Operations - February 2011

At the February 19, 2011, Loudoun Amateur Radio Group's Monthly Meeting, Rick Miller - AI1V of Reston presented a program on the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group's Balloon Operations. This is an outstanding presentation and was quite informative to all. Many more members are now getting ready for our next Flight or Fox Hunt. This presentation was originally made to the Escondido Amateur Radio Society of California by Rick in early February, 2011. Rick says this club is also gearing up to "FLY."

The Great Little Fox Hunt of 2010

The Balloon Committee of the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group chaired by Tom Dawson - WB3AKD conducted a Duel Fox Hunt on May 15, 2010. The Hunt Group was small but they were sucessful in finding the "Easy Fox." Read more as reported by Denny Boehler - KF4TJI.

Flight 2009A - K4LRG/B

The Balloon Committee of the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group successfully conducted a high altitude balloon flight over  Northern Virginia and into Maryland on Sunday, October 25, 2009. Launch was at 0932 hours local from Harrisonburg, VA. We flew two payloads 1) the Tom Dawson - WB3AKD K4LRG/B 145.650 MHz CW Beacon and 2) the Mike McBurnett - KJ4KGB APRS Rocket Altimeter. Recovery was in east of Poolesville, MD.

Flight 2008A - K4LRG/B  LBCFM-9

The Balloon Committee of the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group successfully conducted a high altitude balloon flight over  Northern Virginia on Saturday, July 19, 2008. Launch was at 9 AM local from Summit Point, WV. The telemetry beacon with Data operated on 145.650 MHz. Recovery was in northeast Loudoun County near Taylorstown, VA.

The Dual Foxes Of 2007A  LBCFHM-3

Tom Dawson - WB3AKD, the Chairman of the LARG Balloon Cmte, deployed Dual Foxes of July 21, 2007. It was fun figuring out what was going on and tracking them down in Western Loudoun.

The Great Fox Hunt of 2006A LBCFHM-2

The LARG Balloon Cmte is back in business. This Fox Hunt took us up into Jefferson County, WV. Fifteen members of the LARG participated. And, with a little special help, everyone found the Fox. It was a great day.

The LARG Balloon Cmte successfully launch and flew HABCAT-3 on LARG Flight 2004A on Saturday, August 7, 2004. Payload failures near or at touchdown prevented recovery.

Flight 1999A The Great Launch Of 1999  LBCFM-1

On April 24, 1999, the LARG launched a small 11-ounce Ham Radio Beacon from Rocky Gap State Park, Cumberland, MD. It reached 100,000 feet where it burst and the payload drifted back to earth.
