Tiger Cub Amateur Radio Demonstration
Operation Plan 2000-1

Mission: On Wednesday, February 2, 2000, members of the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group will conduct a live amateur radio demonstration for the Tiger Cub Den of the Hamilton, Virginia, Cub Pack at the Hamilton Elementary School from 7:30 to 8:00 P.M.

Concept Of Operation: Radio equipment and antennas will be set up at the school starting at 6:30 P.M. The Tiger Cub Den will hold its regular meeting at 7:00 to 7:30 P.M. The demonstration will begin at 7:30 P.M. The demonstration will begin with a very short introduction to amateur radio than the den will be divided into three groups which will rotate among the three amateur radio stations. The intent is to finish the demonstration by about 8:00 P.M.

Introduction: Introduce LARG members (by Dale Cabaniss, KD4LSL), discuss the primary purpose of amateur radio (by Norm Styer, AI2C), show map of Loudoun County with the QTHs of LARG members, show a world map of amateur radio countries and call sign prefixes, show some QSL cards, demonstrate fox hunting equipment(by Dennis Boehler, KF4TJI) and demonstrate Morse Code sending (Norm Styer, AI2C will furnish his code practice set). Organize the den into three groups. The introduction must not exceed 5 minutes - keep it very simple.

Radio Demonstrations: Each station will be under the control of at least one LARG member. The LARG call K4LRG will be used. Each group should be told something about the radio being demonstrated and the call signs of the LARG Outstations that are standing by on frequency. The LARG operator should call one of the outstations and establish radio contact then allow each of the Tiger Cubs to call the Outstation and talks briefly to the Outstation. Outstation Operators should be prepared and ask each Tiger Cub several questions. The idea is to have short exchange on information with each Tiger Cub. The exchange might include information about names, grades, age, favorite subjects in school or sporting activities. Each Tiger Cub QSO should not last more than 3 minutes. The Tiger Cubs will sign in on the K4LRG station log and complete some basic log information (Tiger Cub name, age, den/pack numbers, station worked and its operator's name, time, date and frequency) (These log sheets will be provided by Norm Styer, AI2C). The LARG member/operator should encourage each Tiger Cub and he should be prepared to assist them in getting started. And of course, keep the rotation of Tiger Cubs moving every three or less minutes. As soon as a group has finished with their rotation at one radio station they should be prepared to move to the next site. It may be possible to get some of the Tiger Cubs to each of the three stations. The quality of the QSO should come before meeting time limits. There may be some Tiger Cubs who will not want to talk but only watch others; this will be OK. Remember these Tiger Cubs are first graders and their attention span is sometimes limited so be prepared to keep them involved. This will be fast moving event once the Cubs get an idea of what is expected and is happening. The parents of most Tiger Cubs will also be present and will more than likely accompany their Tiger Cub and will also be interested in the demonstration.

Closing: Following the Radio Demonstrations, Norm Styer, AI2C and Dale Cabaniss, KD4LSL will provide some ARRL furnished handouts including the ARRL Scout Handbook and the Archie's Ham Radio Adventure Comic Book. In addition, a Morse Code card showing the dit and dah code will be provided each Tiger Cub.

Follow On Demonstration: Dale Cabaniss, KD4SLS, has indicated that a few older Scouts may try to get to the meeting by 8:00 P.M. If this happens we may continue the demonstration for a short time - no more than 15 minutes - to give these older Scouts a chance to also talk on the radios.

Close Stations - March Order: After the demonstration is completed and most Scouts are departing, the on-site LARG members will assist each other in disassembling the stations and pack for the march order.

Radio Station Configurations and LARG Operators:

Siting: Four areas will be used in the school cafeteria. One central table for the opening demonstration, one on the stage for the 2 Meters station and two others on opposite corners of the room for the 10 and 80 Meter stations. Power drop cords will be provided by Norm Styer, AI2C, as required.

The 2 Meter Station. This station will be a Hand held Radio provided by and operated by Dennis Boehler, KF4TJI. The operating frequency will be 147.480 MHZ simplex. Dennis will be assisted by Carol Boehler, KF4TJJ. A 1/4 wave and a 5/8 wave whip, provided by Norm Styer, AI2C, will be used as antennas.

Outstations On 2 Meters:

Ray Houff, K4AJA Larry Hughes, KG4CGR

The 10 Meter Station. This station will be a Yaesu FT-840 with Marine Battery provided by Dale Cabaniss, KD4LSL. The operating frequency will be 28.400 MHZ. Dale will be assisted by John Unger, W4AU. The antenna will be a mag-mounted 1/4 wave 10 Meter whip antenna mounted on the cab of Norm Styer's, AI2C, pickup truck parked outside the school with coax cable run into the demonstration area through a side door.

Outstations On 10 Meters:

Mark Gillam, N3GMW and Mark's two sons. Gary Quinn, NC4S

The 80 Meter Station. This station will be an ICOM 730 belonging to Gary Quinn, NC4S, and brought to the demonstration by Dennis Boehler, KF4TJI. A 12 volt dc power supply will also be furnished. The operating frequency will be 3.940 MHZ plus or minus the QRM. This station will be operated by Bill Buchholz, K8SYH. The antenna will be a Hustler Mobile Whip mounted the rear bumper on Norm Styer's, AI2C, pickup truck parked outside the school with coax cable run into the demonstration area through a side door.

Outstations On 80 Meters:

Charlie Preston, K4LJH Paul Dluehosh, N4PD

Norm Styer, AI2C will be available to assist where it may be necessary.

Other Stations: Other LARG and Non-LARG Amateur Radio members and stations are encouraged to participate. Contact the liaison officers listed below. Radio Interference: This on the air activity will be on a non-interference basis. As necessary change operating frequencies to avoid harmful interference.
