As Reported on January 28, 2010 By Steve Green - KS1G

January 27, 2010

Loudoun Amateur Radio Group
members demonstrated amateur radio
to Tiger Cubs in Ashburn, VA.

Members Participating:
KS1G - Steve Green KJ4BRN - Doug Johnson
KT9N - Chris Fristad W3CUM - Chris Patton

The scouts, 1st graders, and their parents were able to:

  • Spell their names in morse code and hear what it sounds like (Thanks, Chris, KT9N, for bringing the code practice key and working that table)
  • See a portable VHF/HF station in a box (Chris, W3CUM), hear more morse code (Cub Scout Promise) and voice (recording of Haiti relief net) and hear parts of the Thursday LARG net.
  • Have a QSO with another scout from their Den on 2M (Chris/W3CUM, Doug, and myself) and receive a QSL card for their 1st radio contact.
  • See displays of QSL cards, maps, Doug's fox-hunting antenna (I want to build one of those) and other radio gear.
  •       We also told the den leader and adults about Field Day and the GOTA station. The Den presented us with a thank you letter (Doug is going to try to scan it).

The den leader mentioned she was going to tell the other den leaders about us, so we may get contacted for other demos. A number of the adults have family who are/were hams, and many asked about the club and licensing. So we might get a new ham or two out of this as a bonus.

A very successful evening and fun for all involved. Thank you all for your participation.

Best Regards, Steve Green - KS1G
