On Saturday, October 14, 2000, the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group operated their K4LRG Amateur Radio Station from the site of the Heritage Camporee held by the Goose Creek District, National Capitol Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America at the Potts Family Farm, est. 1753, north of Round Hill in Loudoun County, Virginia.

The morning Scout activities session was devoted to visiting the radio site and talking to other Amateur Radio Operators around Loudoun County and across the United States and South America. About 125 Scouts visited the radio site and made seventy-five QSOs.

Radio operations were conducted on 80, 40 and 10 Meter Bands on SSB Voice, on 20 Meter CW QRP and on 2 Meters FM Voice. Three radio stations and four antennas were installed and used in accordance with the OPlan.

LARG members operating their equipment on-site were Larry - KC1YC, Art - KD4CSO, Norm - AI2C. They were assisted on-site by Larry - KG4CGR. Bob - KF4VBM  and Austin Styer, a Student Member of the LARG, also helped to set up antennas on Friday afternoon.

LARG members also provided Out-Station support by talking with the Scouts and included Carol - KF4TJJ in Leesburg, Ray - K4AJA in Purcellville, Bob- KF4VBM near Waterford, Paul - N4PD in Leesburg, Gary - NC4S near Lovettsville, Tom - WB3AKD/Mobile  near Thurmont, MD, Bill - WB4ACC in Leesburg, and Larry - KG4CGR west of Winchester, VA.

Several other Amateur Radio Stations also talked to the Boy Scouts:  Steve - N3ZZS in Cherry Tree, PA,  Craig - N8SFY in Brooklyn, Mi and Craig's son Ian who is also a Scout, Bob - NA2T in Moscow, PA, Keith - N2IFG in Buffalo, NY, Auldie - WA6IBB in Riverside, CA, Denny - N5DRG in Austin, TX,  Raname - NP3F in Puerto Rico,   KD5DUQ in Hammond, LA, James - AC6LX in San Clementy, CA, Len - 8R1Z in Georgetown, Guyana, Dave - KG7EW in Mendo, Utah, Rob - KF2YN in Springfield, VA, and Butch - N8LE in Capon Springs, WV.

The Radio Station was located on a high point on the farm and in the center of the activity filed. All morning long they kept visiting to see you we were talking to or to try the Morse Code on the hand key.

Not only was the weather great but the radio conditions were super. The Scouts got an opportunity to talk all the way across the United States.

Scout Vincent was determined to talk to his Grandfather in Kansas City and we tried several times but the skip on 10-Meters was to great and our signals were jumping over each other.  But he has joined the Loudoun Amateur Radio Group as a Student Member and we are sure he'll have his Amateur Radio License soon and will be talking to his Grandfather directly everyday.

Art - KD4CSO had a super set up on the 2-Meter VHF Band and talked to many stations in Northern Virginia. Art's a true emergency station including pop-up antenna mast and solar power arrays.

Everyone had a good time. When not at the radio station, the Scouts enjoyed other games of skill and worked on lunch and their very nicely laid out camp site.

Take a look at some of the other activities.

Best Regards From The Loudoun Amateur Radio Group.
Hope To Meet You At Another Camporee.
Best Regards de K4LRG
