July-August Club Meeting Reports
Since this Newsletter will be the first one since July, well try and catch up on a few items. First, the foxhunt at the July LARG meeting was a great success, at least so far as the foxes were concerned. Fox-1, also known as Dennis, KF4TJI, and Carol, KF4TJJ, were discovered by all of the hounds. But Fox-2, Gary, NC4S, proved to be more elusive, and was only found by two crews. Tom, WB3AKD, and Jacob, KF4VLQ, performed the best overall, and their technique of using a hand-held 3-element Yagi plus a small loop for close-in work was a successful strategy.
September Club Meeting Plans
We will begin a club construction project, which is to build one of the 2-meter direction-finding loop antennas that Tom, WB3AKD, has used with great success during recent foxhunts. The club is furnishing the difficult parts, the solid copper shield coax. All you have to do is show up and build the antenna!
Club News
A large (LARG?) number of club members attended two of the favorite local hamfests during the past months. Berryville was very popular being so close to Western Loudoun. We also had a good turnout for the last Gaithersburg Hamfest just this past weekend. Gary, NC4S, couldnt resist a set of three ARC-5 receivers in almost perfect condition to add to his growing collection. Paul, N4PD, decided to cure those 33 reports he was getting from western Loudoun on the Sunday 2-meter net; he bought a 15-element beam and so should be a solid 59 copy now. Norm, AI2C, would like LARG members to bring their 10-Meter Trophy logs to the club meeting this Saturday. He wants to see what the standings look like at this point in time. Remember, guys, we only have about 3 1/2 months left to catch Norm! Welcome back to Ray, K4AJA, who spent a month in Connecticut visiting his family; don't worry, he did not return with a New England accent. Otto, W4QDP, is recovering FB from this recent knee operations and was spotted in Hamilton walking around without any canes or other support! The second LARG Novice/Technician license class got underway on September 10 at the new Leesburg Public Safety build (Police Department). We have 8 prospective new hams in the class, which will run for 9 weeks. This facility is just about perfect for teaching a class like this, but we do need an overhead projector. If someone has one that we could borrow for the next couple of months, please let Paul, N4PD, or John, W4AU, know.
Events
Keep an eye on this column in future months. The fall contesting season is beginning and there are lots of SSB and CW contests, both domestic, like SweepStakes, and DX, like the CQ World-wide, that have team categories that LARG members can enter. We'll have a schedule of the upcoming contests in the next issue of the newsletter.
For Sale / Wanted
This is a new section of the Newsletter. The ground rules are simple: the ads are only for members of LARG; dont list something for a "friend"; and no commercial advertising.
Mike, W0YR, equipment for sale. As some of you know, Mike now lives in Budapest and is back home in his Loudoun home only about 3 - 4 weeks a year. Mike has the following HF gear for sale at his Middleburg QTH. If someone who is a member of the club wants any of this stuff, Mike will rebate 5% of the sale price to LARG. You can contact Mike via email at: [email protected]
