NOTE: NO NOVEMBER LARG MEETING!!!

Instead, we will have a joint November/December meeting on Saturday, December 4, 1999 in the Conference-Training Room at the Leesburg Police Station on Plaza Street at 8:30a.m. The facility is located on Plaza Street between East Market Street and Edwards Ferry Road. Talk-In is on 147.480 MHz. You can join other LARG members for breakfast before the meeting at the Bob Evans Restaurant located Leesburg Corner Shopping Center (new Outlet Mall).

October Meeting News

We all enjoyed viewing the ZL9CI Campbell Island DXpedition video and were awed by the sounds of the incredible pileups that the operators had to contend with. The club appointed a nominating committee to present the club with a new slate of candidates for our officers at the January 2000 meeting, where we will vote. The committee consists of Ray, K4AJA, Chairman, Charlie, K4LJH, and Gary, NC4S. Please contact one of them if you want to serve as an officer or if you would like to nominate someone for an office. Paul, N4PD, reported that the class for the General License was going well with 6 students still hanging in. After the meeting, a last minute mini-hamfest, sponsored by John, W4AU, and Charlie, K4LJH, took place after the meeting, and a few club members walked away with some new treasures.

November/December LARG Meeting Plans

Norm, AI2C, will discuss Disaster Preparedness and Public Service including supporting video tapes from the ARRL. Each member should be prepared to describe his most important emergency or public service operation.

Club News

Paul, N4PD, is looking for some volunteers to help with communications during Leesburg's First Night New Year's Eve celebration, as we have done for the past 3 or 4 years. All you need to have is a 2-meter HT and some warm clothing. The organizers furnish ample food and warm drinks. The timeframe for this activity is from 5:00p.m. - 10:30 p.m., 12/31/99. Contact Paul if you want to help out.

There are two contests coming up in the next couple of months that have club entries: the SSB Sweepstakes, Nov. 21&22 and the ARRL 10-meter contest, Dec. 11&12. Please contact John, W4AU, or Norm, AI2C, if you entered (CW SS) or plan to enter any of these contests so that we can include your score for a club total score. Last year LARG finished 3rd in the "Small Club" category in the 10-meter contest. Even if you get on the air for only a few QSO's during the contest, please tell us and we will send in your log for you and count it for the club score.

Congratulations to John, W4AU, whose 1382 QSO's and score of 1,061,376 put him in 2nd place finish in Virginia for the ARRL CW DX contest. A number of LARGers took part in the recent Pennsylvania QSO Party. Bill, K8SYH, operated portable from a tent in a campground in rare Sommerset County and got a "sweep", working all 67 counties in the state; Tom, WB3AKD, operated mobile from at least 6 counties in the southern part of the state. John, W4AU, who also managed a "sweep", and Norm, AI2C, took part in the QSO Party from their home QTHs.

We have some success stories from our first General Class license class. Dennis, KF4TJI; Mary, KF4UUY; and Larry, KG4CGR have all passed their written exams - now on to the CW exam!
