April Club Meeting Report
The April meeting saw an amazing influx of new members; its
gratifying to see this increased interest in LARG.
The Club decided to look into teaching a second class for ham
license exam preparation; Paul, N4PD,
volunteered to organize this effort, which will probably take
place this fall. We had long discussion about using VHF for the
weekly LARG net and finally decided to test the
reliability of 2-meter simplex as a first step (see Club News,
below).
May Club Meeting Notes
We will continue discussion and preparation for this years
Field Day activities. We have not yet completed final
arrangements with Ida Lee for use of that property; we are trying
to have the use fee and liability insurance requirements waived.
However, thanks to Ren, N4CRS, we have been
offered an alternative site at the Glaydin School, which is
located north of Leesburg, between Lucketts and Taylorstown. The
Field Day Committee recently conducted a preliminary survey of
this site, and it looks ideal for our purposes. It does not have
access to the general public like Ida Lee, however. We have to
make a final decision at the May meeting as to where we want to
hold this years Field Day. Bring a list of your vacuum tube
needs to the May meeting. We will be auctioning and selling a
large collection of tubes that were generously donated to the
club. The tubes include everything from antiques of the 20s
to modern miniatures. All proceeds will go to LARG, so dont
forget to bring a little extra cash!
Club News
The Club and all its members sends their deepest
sympathies to Otto, W4QDP and Bob, KD4WNQ,
who both lost their wives during the last month. Included with
this months Newsletter is an updated copy of the 1998 LARG
Membership Listing that was distributed last month; we had so
many new members sign up at the last meeting that we thought we
should publish an updated list. New frequency for the
Sunday night LARG net: trial runs that
past few weeks have shown that we can use 147.480
simplex and have reliable communications for everyone who is
checking in; now all licensed club members can join us! Congratulations
to the newest licensed ham in LARG; Gabe, KF4YBW,
passed his technician test a few weeks ago! REMEMBER!:
This newsletter still needs a name. Communicate your ideas for a
name to the editor sometime before (or during) the May club
meeting, where the club officers will figure out some equitable
way to choose a winner (note: the editors vote counts extra
8-)
). p.s. the (blushing) editor finally got the
clubs secretarys phone number correct on the
masthead, sorry Nancy

The table included with this newsletter shows the final tally for
LARGs efforts in the VA QSO Party for 1998. Everyone who
participated deserves a hearty well done just for
getting on the air and contributing some points to the
clubs score. Thanks to all of you! Norm, AI2C,
and John, W4AU, hand-delivered the logs and
summary sheets to the QSO Party Director; so we know that they
had all the information before the deadline. Now we just have to
wait for the results to be announced at the Manassas Hamfest in
June.
For Sale / Wanted
This is a new section of the Newsletter. The ground rules are
simple: the ads are only for members of LARG;
dont list something for a friend; and no
commercial advertising.
