NOTE: June Meeting Place
The LARG will hold its Monthly Meeting at 8:30 AM on Saturday, June 19, 1999, at the QTH of Amateur Radio Station NC4S - Gary Quinn at 14282 Rehoboth Church Road, Lovettsville, VA 20180, Phone: (540) 882-3017. See driving direction below. Talk-In is on 147.480 MHz Simplex. For those who wish, you may join others at the American Dinner in Leesburg for breakfast at 7:30 AM.
The main topic for our June Meeting will be our planning and preparation for the Annual ARRL Field Day Operation. We will also have a short work party after the meeting to prepare the barn ground cover and the tarp placed over the green house for a station shelter and to make the final measurements for the layout and orientation of our HF antennas. NOTE: If you plan to operate during Field Day but cannot make the June 19 meeting, contact John, W4AU, to sign up for a time slot for operating.
1999 Field Day Plans
The Loudoun Amateur Radio Group Field Day Committee, chaired by NC4S - Gary, has made the following assignments:
John Unger - W4AU is the Band Captain for our Field Day Operations and one of the HF Station Captains.
Tom Garasic - KF4FXT is a Station Captain providing his HF rig
Gary Quinn - NC4S is the Station Captain for our third HF station.
Tom Carney - WB9RXJ is the Station Captain for our VHF/UHF station.
Field Day Operations will take place at Gary's farm beginning with antenna set up and testing on Friday night June 25, 1999. The club as in years past will again operate Class 3A with a VHF/UHF station.
We will as in years past have the operations sign-up sheet at the club meeting so come soon to get the times you want. If you haven't had Ray's - K4AJA special Sunday breakfast you will want to be one of the night operators to get the special treatment.
LARG will need your support this year for equipment, setup, and operations so join us for the fun.

May LARG Meeting News
Ray, K4AJA, showed the video that he and others had taken of LARG balloon launch 99-1, and everyone renewed their enthusiasm for the next balloon launch, 99-2, currently scheduled for August 14. Dennis, KF4TJI, presented the status of equipment sign-ups for Field Day and got some more commitments of time and equipment for our big weekend activity. We will finalize the lists at the June 19 club meeting.
Club News
LARG had good representation at the Dayton Hamvention this year. Norm, AI2C, Gary, NC4S, and John, W4AU, and Bob, W4POF, and Shirley, KF4VBZ, made the long drive from Loudoun County to Dayton and spent two full days seeing more hams and more ham-related equipment than they thought existed! They also rubbed elbows with some of the big names in amateur radio at the DX and Contesting banquets held Friday and Saturday nights. A good time was had by all, but, boy, were we tired& Both John, W4AU, and Charlie, K4LJH, worked Tom, WB3AKD/KP2, on 20-meters SSB from his portable DX QTH on St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. Tom was only able to get on the air for two evenings with a marginal antenna, but he will be going back again the week of June 14, so other LARG members can catch him then.
VA QSO Party Results
(see table on next page)LARG had a tremendous turnout for the VA QSO party this year with 24 club members participating and submitting 31 logs, but, alas, our valiant effort to win the club category fell short of its mark. Our score of 458,138 was a tremendous improvement over last year's ~285,000 total, but the Central Virginia Contest Club was victorious again and set a new VA QSO Party club record of 630,052. We did have some outstanding individual efforts, though, and LARGers won some handsome plaques at the Manasses Hamfest award ceremonies. Norm, AI2C, was the high individual all-mode winner; Carol, KF4TJJ, was first in the single operator VHF category, and Dennis, KF4TJI, won the novice/tech division for the second year in a row. A number of other club members were awarded certificates for first, second, or third place finishes in other categories. As club President AI2C says, "Wait until next year; all we need is about 7,500 more points from each LARG entrant, and we'll be in first place!"
