HIGHLIGHTS FOR OUR UPCOMING OCTOBER 19 MEETING:

Your defacto newsletter editor would first like to apologize for this edition of the LARG newsletter being so late. Work travel along with a busy Columbus Day weekend (including the Howard County Hamfest) conspired to keep my mind on other things; sorry. Anyway, the "Show and Tell" session that we had at the September club meeting was such a success that we decided to try it again this month. So those of you who couldn?t make it to the September meeting or who forgot to bring something then will have another chance this coming Saturday to show off your favorite hamfest purchase or any other item of ham-related gear in your collection. Also, everyone who brought something last time can bring in another item to share with the rest of us. Following the formal meeting we will have a short discussion of logistics for those of you who have volunteered to help with communications at the Morvan Park Mountain Bike Races on 10/27.

AUGUST MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

The "Show and Tell" session at the September LARG club meeting was a great success and everyone enjoyed both telling about the items that they brought and seeing and hearing about the things that others described. Among the interesting items were: Charlie's, K4LJH, laboratory spark coil - the making of a fine spark transmitter (?); Dale's, KD4LSL, "secret" motion sensor and transmitter concealed in water buffalo excrement (you have to see this one to believe it); Wes's, WA4TSC, new Radio Shack digital multi meter with computer interface (I was so impressed with this meter that I went out and bought one!); Paul, N4PD, showed off his "new" Gonset Communicator 2-meter AM transceiver. (Late note - the first modern trans-Loudoun 2-meter AM communications test, which was attempted last Sunday night between Leesburg (N4PD) and Purcellville (K4AJA), failed; Ray reported that he did hear an unmodulated carrier a few 100 Kcs from Paul's reported transmitting frequency, though, so stay tuned!).

UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENT

LARG has once again been asked to provide communications for the Morvan Park Mountain Bike Race in Leesburg. Those who participated last year know what an interesting and challenging event this is, both for the participants and for those of us providing communications support. The date for this year's race is October 27, and the time commitment is from 8:00 a.m. to about 3:00 p.m. It may be possible to break down the participation into shifts, if you don?t want to commit to the entire time period. We already have some repeat volunteers from last year, but need a few more names. Call John, W3GOI, 338-4620, if you are interested in helping out.
