NOVEMBER MEETING CANCELLED & SPECIAL DECEMBER 2 MEETING!

As most of you know, our regular meeting place at the N.C. BBQ on 21st Street in Purcellville suffered another fire a few months ago and has been closed. The owner has chosen to relocate his restaurant in the small shopping center at the southwest corner of the intersection of Maple Ave. and Main St. in Purcellville, across from the 7-11 store. The new restaurant may not be open in time for our regular November meeting; therefore, the club officers decided to combine the November and December meetings and have one meeting in early December, before the Christmas Holidays. Therefore, our next LARG club meeting will be at 8:00 a.m. on December 2 in the new restaurant.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE OCTOBER MEETING:

Our October meeting was held at the National Weather Service facility near Dulles. Thanks to Temp, W4HZV, we had an interesting and varied program (as well as coffee and donuts!). First, we were given an informative and interesting talk by Barbara Watson about the Sky Warn program that the NWS sponsors. She told us of the importance of having on the ground observers for severe weather reporting. It was interesting to learn that the western Loudoun County region is a key location for the intensification of severe thunderstorms and that the NWS is actively seeking hams from our area to be part of the Sky Warn network. Next, we went to the radiosonde balloon launching facility where we observed Lynn Winnans prepare a balloon and radiosonde for a "flight". It was nice to be able to see how the experts, who launch two balloons a day, 365 days a year, carry out this operation. Lynn made the whole sequence look easy. Dale, KD4LSL, videotaped the launch and associated activities, and the tape will be shown at a club meeting this winter. We were also given a tour of the test facility where new weather instruments are developed and tested before going into routine service. It was a most interesting morning, and thanks again to Temp, for making it all possible.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR OUR DECEMBER MEETING:

John, W3GOI, will demonstrate TR, a contest logging program that hehas used in a variety of contests recently, both on phone and CW.  You may be interested in seeing how a state-of-the-art contest logging program works so that rates of over 150 QSOs per hour can be achieved!! In addition, Charlie, K4LJH will display the 1929-design CW transmitter that he recently built and used in the Antique Wireless Association contest. We also will have nominations for new LARG officers for 1997 at the December meeting.
