LARG Monthly Meeting
September 15, 2001

The 9/15/01 meeting of LARG, held in the Leesburg Public Safety Building, was called to order by President Denny Boehler, KF4TJI, at 8:43 a.m. Following the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, a moment of silence was observed in memory of the events of September 11th.

Reports from the secretary and treasurer were approved as presented.

Tom Dawson, WB3AKD, reported that the planned after meeting tethered balloon flight was being cancelled in light of the tragic events earlier in the week. The scheduled October launch will most likely be postponed to next year. John Rehwinkel, KG4L, demonstrated the ATV package which several members were able to receive well on site.

John Unger, W4AU, reported that the ARRL single side band sprint contest scheduled for 9/15-16 had been cancelled. He called attention to the current QST contest corral section in which the good 10 Meter CW results were posted, including those for our own Paul Dluehosh, N4PD.

Mark Gillam, N3GMW, thanked all who participated in communications for this year's Reston Bike Rides on Sunday 8/26th. All systems worked well. Jay Greeley, for the Loudoun chapter of the American Red Cross, presented certificates to those who helped. Number of cyclists riding this year was greater than last as were funds raised for Loudoun's Red Cross chapter.

Jay also spoke about the communications set-up between the Red Cross building in Leesburg and the Dulles Marriott for the past week. He and Tom, WB3AKD and local ARES coordinator, thanked all LARG members who were involved in this effort. Larry Hughes, KG4CGR, talked about his participation through the Arlington Radio Club in support of the Red Cross and Salvation Army efforts at the Pentagon.

Bill Buchholz, K8SYH, restated information about the upcoming Technician Class beginning 9/20 at the Balch Library. We now have training videos as well as instructor manuals. Both Bill and Paul, N4PD, encouraged members to sign up to teach or help at least one week during the course.

Norm Styer, AI2C, thanked all (on-site as well as off-site stations) who helped with the Boy Scout event in Bealton, VA. on the previous Saturday. Check out pictures and comments from this and other LARG activities on our club web site. Roy Jackson, KF4IVG, commended Norm's nice work.

When asked about this year's Leesburg First Night celebration, Paul, N4PD, stated that this may be a non-event since the planning committee has not been meeting throughout this year.

Carol Boehler, KF4TJJ, led a discussion about LARG's traditional Holiday Dinner. She and Bettieanne Parmer will look into possible dates, times and places to present at the next meeting.

Both Norm, AI2C, and Paul, N4PD, encouraged participation in the Tuesday 8 p.m. slow code net.

Denny, KF4TJI, reminded all of meeting dates for the remainder of this year: October 20th and November 17th at 8:30 a.m. in the Leesburg Public Safety Building. Holiday event in Dec., tba.

The September meeting was adjourned at 10:22 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Carol L. Boehler,
KF4TJJ, Secretary
